BURNHAM BLOG: BEYOND BOUNDARIES
The Next 100 Years: Planning Beyond BoundariesDaniel Burnham was dealing with our future, and so will we. The strong belief held throughout our region that planning works, that citizens can shape their destiny, was influenced by Burnham’s bold 1909 plan, and its visible results. The Burnham Plan Centennial intends not only to celebrate that gift, but also to encourage the region to continue the tradition – to plan as boldly as Burnham for the rest of the 21st century and beyond. We will use this corner of the Centennial’s website for a forum on the future. Some of the Chicago area’s best thinkers on the manmade environment, urban and suburban, will write commentary on the urban landscape, architecture, transportation, sprawl, and the way the built environment affects the quality of our lives. We’ll talk about things that went right because they were planned wisely, and things that went wrong because they weren’t. This blog will also include you, readers who respond to this commentary by disagreeing, amplifying, criticizing. The discussion will be about subjects in the news (where do we put a children’s museum, anyway? Shouldn’t the Olympics leave a transit legacy?) or things that should be in the news (tolls on all our highways? What the suburban towns are planning better than Chicago?). It will be lively and current, and it starts soon. So watch this space. In the meantime, for questions and suggestions, contact Jack Davis at Chicago Metropolis 2020 – jack.davis@cm2020.org. |
