1909 Plan of ChicagoBold New Plans |
NEW REGIONAL PLANSA new regional vision“At no period in its history has the city looked far enough ahead... Therefore, no one should hesitate to commit himself to the largest and most comprehensive undertaking…” ![]() The year 2009 will be a time to build on the comprehensive regional planning tradition that began with Burnham’s plan in 1909, and to secure new commitments to bold plans that will make the Chicago region one of the world’s best places to live and work in the 21st century. One of the regional planning initiatives emerging for 2009 is the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s (CMAP) first comprehensive land use and transportation plan. This plan will be published in 2010 and during 2009 there will be extensive opportunities for the public to make choices about the plan for the region’s future. Other bold new plans will emerge over the next two years, including details of legacies from Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid, and plans for a world-class transportation system. More information will be posted as plans develop. 2009 will also be a year to showcase some of the best planning in the Chicago region, especially plans that go beyond the boundaries of neighborhoods and suburban communities to have regional impact.
