The Crash of 1929

All anyone could hear on Thursday, October 24th, 1929, were the words, "Sell! Sell! Sell!" Although the stock market stabilized that day, the panic continued and right around the corner was the single most devastating day in the market's history. The crash of the stock market would end the prosperity of the 20's and lead to the Great Depression.

WHAT IS A STOCK?

 

Read What is a stock, anyway? Now that you know what a stock is, it will be easier to understand how and why the stock market crashed on Tuesday, October 29, 1929.

2:: RESEARCH THE CRASH
 

Read the following sections from "The Crash and the Great Depression":

  • Optimism and Prosperity
  • A "Bull Market"
  • The Crash

Once you have read the sections, answer the following questions in complete sentences.

  1. Who was the elected President in 1928 and how did he see the future for most Americans?
  2. How did John Jacob Raskob feel everyone could get wealthy and what was wrong with this plan?
  3. Describe, in your own words, the speculations explaining why so many people invested money in the 20's in the stock market.
  4. What happened on October 24, 1929 to earn this day the title "Black Thursday?"
  5. Describe the events on "Black Tuesday."
