Title: Soldiers' Monument

Artist: Unknown

Commissioned by: Chicago Soldiers' Home

Location: Oak Woods Cemetery 1035 E. 67th Street

Medium: Granite (?)

Commentary: The worn form of a Union soldier standing on top of a pedestal, with civil war cannons at each side, is the earliest public statue in Chicago. Around it are Union graves. On the other side of the cemetery, and very much larger, is a monument to Confederate soldiers who died in a Chicago prison camp during the Civil War.

The Oak Woods Cemetery is a wonderful place to study Chicago's history--a good locale for a walk or a field trip.
