D E F I N I T I O N
The word excavate means "to expose by digging away overlying material; unearth" or "to expose an archaeological site."

F U N   F A C T
"After being found, a fossil must be carefully freed from the rocky matrix that encased it for millions of years without damaging it... Most of the overlying rock (the overburden) is removed using large tools (like picks and shovels)."
