River City, east bank of the Chicago River south of Harrison Street, 1985. The South Loop developed into a major residential area in the 1980s. Pictured here are the squat towers of Bertrand Goldberg's River City, a new residential complex along the river's South Branch. By 1985, over 9,000 people lived in the South Loop area.
