The painting on the left is Civilization by G. W. Maynard. It is typical of paintings of the time which tend to represent classical images of beauty based on religious themes, rulers, or mythological legends. The painting on the right is The Man with the Hoe by J.F. Millet. Millet was unique at the time because he painted vivid, natural-looking, ordinary people instead of idealized images of beautiful, wealthy people. He influenced artists such as Van Gogh.
