Title: Forecast

Artist: John Henry

Commissioned by: Memorial to Irving Schweiger, a professor in the University of Chicago Graduate Business School

Location: 5535 S. Ellis, Court Theater

Medium: Bronze

Commentary: At first this looks like a confused jumble of metal poles. To understand it, though, think what the poles would look like if they were really just thrown in a jumble. By making the comparison, you see that this has order and planning. There is a balance, but it is uncertain. The poles rise from the ground where the really confused jumble would stay. And they eventually straighten themselves into upward positions. Maybe (and I am guessing as much as you) it suggests the confusion from which forecasts and understandings arise.

This piece might remind you of Joel Shapiro's "Untitled" which is only steps away in the garden of the Smart Gallery. They are made with similar metal posts and are kind of close to the ground. This one seems more perplexing, though.
