Title: Peace Pole

Artist: Members of the Quaker Meeting

Commissioned by: 5615 S. Woodlawn Quaker Meeting

Location: 5615 S. Woodlawn--Outside Quaker Meeting house

Medium: Metal

Commentary: The Quaker religion is famously pacifist. Quakers won't fight in any war. In 1998 there was a conference at the Quaker Meeting House and the people there decided to set up a small monument to their belief in peace. Since the Quaker religion also emphasizes simplicity, they did not hire an artist or make something big and shiny. They bought a fence post, painted it white and wrote short statements about peace around its sides.

Is a painted fence art? Decide for yourself.
