Title: St. Francis of Assisi

Artist: Alfeo Faggi

Commissioned by: Dr. Lilly

Location: 5735 S. University--Calvert House

Medium: Bronze

Commentary: This graceful figure is meant to represent the gentle saint who is said to have been able to talk with the animals.

The sculptor, Alfeo Faggi, did a number of religious works in Chicago, including the very beautiful Stations of the Cross inside the St. Thomas Church on 55th Street.

Originally, the statue stood in front of a private chapel on a farm owned by Dr. Lilly, the person who commissioned it. At her death, the farm was given to Calvert House as a retreat center. When the retreat center was sold, the statue was moved to its present location
