Title: The Cheap Store

Artist: Unknown

Commissioned by: The Cheap Store

Location: 6840 Stony Island Avenue

Medium: Advertising Art

Commentary: This is one of a number of cut pieces of plywood which have been painted to show the principal product of The Cheap Store: furniture. They do look homey and, since they can be moved about like furniture, kind of natural. Except for the fact that they are badly worn and their colors are dim, they are a delightful homegrown form of advertisement. The artist was a young man who dropped by in 1996 and offered his services. His name is long forgotten.

The Cheap Store is a huge furniture and appliance emporium. You can find just about anything there, though sometimes deep underneath piles of other things. Still, it comes as a surprise that among the sofas and stereos there are quite a few pieces of African sculpture. The fact is that the owner has a real love of beauty.
