Driving
time: about 1 hour.
Exit the
Dan Ryan Expressway at Garfield Boulevard (55th Street) and go east to
Indiana Avenue. Because so much of the surrounding neighborhood is in
the process of decline, this tour confines itself to the boulevards, going
north through the Grand Boulevard area and then south on King Drive through
the Washington Park district.
This tour
begins at Wentworth Avenue (200 West), the historic dividing line between
Chicago's white and black communities. From its northern terminus at 16th
Street to 63rd Street, Wentworth cut through the heart of the city's South
Side working-class neighborhoods. By the time the Dan Ryan Expressway
opened in 1962, black families had moved west of Wentworth, bringing an
end to the street's history of racial division.
