Peristyle Gate viewed from pier
Peristyle Water Gate « previous 8 of 16 next »

Most people traveled to the fair by train and did not get to see this view of the gate. This photo shows how the Peristyle Water Gate appeared from the pier for those who arrived by boat. The gate had a central archway and featured 48 columns that represented the states of the union and the territories. Statues covered the gate as tributes to great explorers. A statue of Columbus riding a chariot pulled by four horses tops the gate. The Peristyle Water Gate ran between the Music Building and Casino. The Gate, Music Hall, and Casino were designed by C.B. Atwood, of Chicago.
