In 1831, Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper. It was
a machine that could cut grain grain much faster than it could
be done by hand. It was pulled by horses (tractors were not invented
yet). The invention was so successful Cyrus started the McCormick
Harvesting Machine Company which became a leader in the farm
equipment industry.
