Race, Gender and Imperialism at the Fair Images

This statue
of Columbus illustrates some criticisms people have of imperialism. Imperialism
is the practice of a nation taking control of another nation or area by
force. Columbus is shown planting the flag of Spain in the ground holding
out his sword to claim the land he thought he discovered. America had
already been occupied by native peoples. The Spaniards wound up killing
many of these native people and forced the remaining to follow the rule
of Spain. Some people today criticize the fair because it seemed to support
imperialism.
