What needs to be included in the search procedures for the digital library?
  1. NARROWING TOPIC CHOICES (i.e., critical thinking process)
    • remember that realistic maximum time for a successful search is probably about 20 minutes
    • reading level selected
    • identify subject or topic
    • written index of subjects in a specific text
    • can take input from teachers' assignments to help guide students
    • asks student to narrow field when his request is too general
    • reference includes length of article
    • allows to print only the needed part of the article
    • limit put on copying amounts
    • ability to print out, so that reading may be done at home
    • provides cross-references like see and see also
    • recognizes patterns in inquiry by different students and anticipates needs
    • lists types of materials available when asked about a topic
    • provides many links
    • broader and narrower subject headings
    • clear directions for cascading screens with information going from broad topics to specifics
  2. ORGANIZATION OF THE TOOL
    • can provide full text or abstracts
    • able to list table of contents for books
    • able to organize chronologically
