Review

This site was designed in cooperation with NASA and it is immediately noticeable. There are teacher/parent guides for each lesson, which are fully interactive with the children. Remember, this site has a dual focus of aeronautics and math, so the students will get a healthy dose of learning the basics of flight. It was originally designed with physically handicapped students in mind, but it is meant for all students. These lessons have been designed by real teachers and have already been evaluated according to NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) standards. This is a great site for any teacher interested in letting his/her students apply math to real world applications.

The site is divided into three different sections: Applying Flying (4th Grade), Pioneer Plane (5th Grade), and PlaneMath Enterprises (6th-7th). Applying Flying is divided into nine short sections each with a different mission for the student to complete such as determining the shortest distance to fly from San Francisco to New York. Pioneer Plane is divided into two sections. The first section, one based on Amelia Earhart, allows the students to watch a movie about her and then do activities based on her life. The second section, Mission Possible, demonstrates how some of the parts of the plane were invented and then allows the students to operate a helicopter. PlaneMath Enterprises teaches students how to build various parts of the plane.
