Wall of Daydreaming

Artist: Mitchell Caton

Commissioned by: Unknown

Location: 47th Street at Calumet

Medium: Mural

Commentary: Done intertwined with William Walker's "Man's Inhumanity to Man", Caton's mural is shows the evil of the inner city as represented mainly by a horrifying death's head in a suit and white hat at the center. Around this figure swirl pills, handcuffs, illicit lovers, and a snake. Nothing seems to be positive. On the left, Klansmen look on, probably happy at the harm black people are doing to themselves.

This, with Walker's work, show something so distressing that it is hard to believe the pictures were painted in such a public place. But they are supposed to carry a message that African Americans need to confront these great problems before any progress can be made. Can you imagine images so negative and disturbing being painted on a wall in the loop? . . . On the wall of a Mall? It takes a great deal of courage to paint such a picture and a good deal of community understanding to leave it up.
