Commentary:
This work is meant to remind us that one of the most important
steps toward the development of atomic power began at the University
of Chicago. But it is not entirely a happy reminder; the sculpture
suggests a skull, a helmet and the mushroom cloud of an atomic
bomb.
For art lovers, Nuclear Energy is the most important public sculpture
on the south side of Chicago. It was made by Henry Moore, one
of the world's greatest sculptors. Moore liked to make empty spaces
in his work as important as the solid frame. Here you can see
that very well: the deep cavity in the center has as much shape
and character as the metal around it.
