Collodi also began a vast work in 1857 about Florentine social life, which he entitled I misteri di Firenze (The mysteries of Florence) in homage to the French writer Eugène Sue's Les Mystères de Paris (a work that fascinated Umberto Eco, among others, who wrote an important semiotic analysis of it).
