The Javan settlement was an island of tranquility
on the noisy Midway. Most of the cultural displays featured carnivalesque
barkers goading visitors to enter their exhibits. Not the Javanese.
They were often found sitting on the doorsteps of their thatched
roof cottages playing musical instruments. There was a theater
with an orchestra which played native Javan instruments. Java
is an island in the Pacific Ocean south of Vietnam.
