This picture shows a large electrical generator with a bust of Thomas Edison in the foreground. Thomas Edison was a very important American inventor. He invented the first successful lightbulb and the phonograph. Generators like the one shown were used to create electricity for distribution to homes and businesses. Edison developed the first commercial electric lighting power station in 1882.
