2. Race, Gender and Imperialism at the Fair Images

This statue of Columbus illustrates some criticisms people have of imperialism. Imperialism is the practice of a nation taking control of another nation or area by force. Columbus is shown planting the flag of Spain in the ground holding out his sword to claim the land he thought he discovered. America had already been occupied by native peoples. The Spaniards wound up killing many of these native people and forced the remaining to follow the rule of Spain. Some people today criticize the fair because it seemed to support imperialism.
