Trash Can Art

Artist: BeBop Artists

Commissioned by: Joseph A. Clark of Art Werks Gallery

Location: Woodlawn and 53rd Street, and Other Locations

Medium: Painted on Trash Cans

Commentary: In the 1980s, Joe Clark, owner of Art Werks Gallery on 53rd Street, started BeBop (Black Educational and Black Opportunities Program). It consists of teenagers (not necessarily black, despite the name) who learn and practice art in the basement of his shop and usually find uses for it in the neighborhood.

Among their most visible products are these decorated trash cans which enlivened 53rd Street for many years. Now just a few remain but with luck there will be more on the streets after next summer's crop of BeBopers gets busy.
