Commentary:
This is one of the early murals created by Astrid Fuller. Like
all her work, and most of the mural work in our area, it has a
serious and challenging social message. She shows the spirit of
Hyde Park as mainly positive, with men and women caryring out
the productive work of daily life. But in the background there
are ominous signs of division. In one place, a group of seemingly
wealthy and powerful faces look over a fence at the common people
on the other side. In the picture shown here, destructive machines
are tearing down housing in the backgroud.
You might have noticed that Astrid Fuller is one of numerous
female muralists who have done outstanding work in this area.
The mural, which withstood the ravages of time moderately well,
has been all but destroyed by the city's "graffiti blasters"
who have left huge splotches of white all over it. It is no longer
possible to experience it as a whole, but the small sections still
visible testify to the professional mastery of the artist.
