Title: Cornell Monument

Artist: Unknown

Commissioned by: Paul Cornell

Location: Oak Woods Cemetery 1035 E. 67th Street

Medium: Zinc

Commentary: This is the burial place of Paul Cornell and his family. Cornell founded Hyde Park in 1853 and stated many of its institutions including the Oak Woods Cemetery where he is buried. Hyde Park in those days included much of Chicago's South Side including what we now call Oakland, Woodlawn, Grand Crossing and Pullman. Until 1889, however, all of them formed a large suburb called Hyde Park.

The Oak Woods Cemetery is a wonderful place to study Chicago's history--a good locale for a walk or a field trip.
