Title: Tomas Masaryk Monument

Artist: Albin Polasek

Commissioned by: Contributions from Americans of Czech Heritage

Location: On Midway at Harper near Metra Tracks

Medium: Bronze on Granite Base

Commentary: Tomas Masaryk was the founder and first president of the Czech Republic. The sculpture is not supposed to represent the man, but the greatness of his character. It portrays a legendary Czech knight who is said to appear only when his nation is in great crisis.

This is an example of monumental sculpture--showing its subject in a greater than lifelike way. The huge figure stands 40 feet above the ground completely dominating the area around it. Note that the area between the horse's legs is solid so that the sculpture and the base are like one solid block. Monumentality is as much the result of the colossal pedestal on which the work stands as of the sculpture itself.
