The first steam locomotive for rails was developed
by George Stephenson in 1824. That train traveled at about 12
miles per hour. The locomotive in this photo was named No. 999.
This train, which claimed to be the fastest in the world in 1893,
could travel as fast as 112 miles per hour. Outside the Transportation
Building there were tracks with different trains on display.
