Harlem Renaissance

A great literary and artistic community emerged from a cultural movement sparked, in part, by the migration of black Americans from the South to the urban North. Many of these people settled in Harlem, just north of Manhattan in New York City. Harlem became a center of African American culture and celebrated and encouraged the literary and artistic expression of the culture. Some artists, writers, and performers who emerged from the Harlem Renaissance included W. E. B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Zora Neale Hurston, Dorothy West, and Langston Hughes.
