Commentary:
The decorations here are of three kinds: mosiac panels under the
roof called "Song of Enlightenment by Zwierzynski, Townsend
and Olomidun; columns or "House Posts" elaborately decorated
with mosaic and supporting the car portico are by Nina Smoot Cain
and student artists; and decorated arches outside the side entrance,
called "To Think of the World", are by Zwierzynski,
Olomidum and Schuster.
All of the artists involved are major figures in the Chicago
mosaic and sculpture community. Their works, usually done through
the Chicago Publicl Art Group, can be found throughout the city.
The building here was once "Two Artists Row", part
of a major experiment in creating art incubators in South Shore.
For a number of years this building and "One Artists Row"
across the street were the center of much artistic activity, including
music and public performance. It was a wonderful idea based on
the fact that South Shore was then he home of a tremendous percentage
of African American Artists in Chicago. Gallery 71, a project
to give summer jobs in art to local teenagers, actually predated
the famous downtown Gallery 37 and was stimulus for it.
