Commentary:
Astrid Fuller's work in two complicated frames is about the misuse
of education. On the left, greedy businessmen and politicians
are trying to make money off schools while children are neglected.
On the right, the schools themselves, presided over by an administrator
in a dark suit, mechanically turn children into product while
a few teachers either fight the system or try to humanize it.
The reference to "fads and frills" probably attempts
to remove everything but the "basics" from the school
curricula. The panel on the right seems, from the clothing people
are wearing, to be in the present while the other clearly represents
the past. Both times seem to share a disregard for the good of
the children being educated.
You might compare the drawing in this with other nearby murals.
It is protest art and its message makes it interesting. But it
looks quite stiff and formal and the figures are labeled to show
what they symbolize in the manner of old fashioned political cartoons.
